Spartans History
The Spartans Football Club was formed in 1951 by two former Edinburgh University players, Elliot Wardlaw and Jimmy Beaumont. They were keen to continue playing in the East of Scotland League and were admitted to the association and league in 1951.
The club was formed for former university and college players, mainly but the constitution allows other interested parties to join.
In the fifties the teams were generally very good but never won any trophies. In the early sixties the club struggled to attract players but those who played kept the club alive and always managed to keep off the bottom of the table.
The mid sixties saw the arrival of Jimmy Dunnett from Edinburgh University. He eventually became captain and as there was no manager in those days he did both jobs and produced a side that won the league in 1971-72. Still in the seventies the club won the King Cup twice and the Scottish Qualifying Cup under three other captains. Jimmy returned to the club as manager in the eighties and won the league in 1983-84 and the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup. He also formed the 3rd XI, the 2nd XI was formed a few years earlier. He was succeeded by Danny Costello, another former player, who won the Scottish Qualifying Cup, the King Cup and the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup. He was in turn succeeded by the present manager Sam Lynch who has won both the East of Scotland Qualifying and Scottish Qualifying Cups. The club has now qualified for the Scottish Cup 11 times in the 21 year membership of the Scottish Football Association
