The match against Clyde was Spartans 20th Scottish Cup tie and marked their twentieth anniversary in the tournament.
Spartans won their first ever Scottish Cup tie 3-2 against East Stirling at Firs Park in a second round tie in January 1979. That took them to the third round for the only time in their history, when they lost 1-2 to Meadowbank Thistle at Meadowbank Stadium. The narrow defeat cost them another Edinburgh derby for Thistle went on to lose to Hibs at Easter Road in the next round.
Both Spartans other victories have been against non-league opposition, Threave Rovers in 1990 and more recently Glasgow University in 1995.
Spartans have won the Qualifying Cup (South) on three occasions, 1979-80, 1988-89 and, most recently, 1996-97 when they defeated Gala Fairydean 2-1 in the final.
Spartans have qualified 12 times the first time in 1978.

As you see Spartans are no stranger to Scottish Cup replays. In 1996 and 1997 they took senior opposition to a second game. In 1996 after winning against Glasgow University they were drawn against East Fife. The Fifers were managed by Steve Archibald. In front of a crowd of 997 the Fifers were held to a 0-0 draw. Steve Oliver was the keeper who foiled league opposition. However he was unable to stop the methil men from winning the replay 2-1 with Gibb and Allan scoring the goals. Nixon got the goal for Spartans. East Fife went out in the next round to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Spartans again featured in the cup the following season and got a bye to the second round. Arbroath were the visitors. The Gayfield side were held to a draw at City Park but in the replay that followed Arbroath won by 3 goals to nil.
This year Spartans featured Eamon Bannon, a player who is no stranger to cup drama. In season 87-88 Dundee United played Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final. It started well for the Tannadice men going ahead through Kevin Gallagher just before half time then with 15 minutes to go Frank "Wurz the Burdz" McAvennie scored twice the second coming in the last 10 seconds of the game. Bannon and his team mates trudged off the park knowing once again a winners medal was out of reach.
